THE GARNET ROOM

The Garnet Room at the Granatium is truly a stunning example of how nature, science, and art can merge. With his passion for garnet, renowned geologist, mineralogist, and philosopher Dr. Georg Kandutsch has created a unique space that is not only visually impressive, but also allows visitors to experience the mysticism and beauty of this gemstone.
80 tons of garnet stones – that’s an impressive amount! The rock material comes from the Kaning Gorge near Radenthein, and hundreds of
garnets from the Löllingergraben. The fact that all of these stones were mined or found exclusively in Carinthia makes the Garnet Room a truly unique regional gem.
The thinly cut and backlit garnet plates create a fascinating play of colors and allow the special properties of this gemstone to shine in a unique way. It’s astonishing how a mineral often known only as a gemstone is showcased here in an entire room.
The Garnet Room invites visitors to escape from everyday life and immerse themselves in a world of peace and magic. They can relax on heated benches, absorb the intense red radiance of the garnet, and marvel at the artistic, blood-red inlays. Gentle sounds enhance the special atmosphere of this unique space.
It was important to me to present only
Carinthian garnet crystals in the Garnet Room . By processing them
I broke new ground in the art of craftsmanship. The construction of
the Garnet Room gave the red gemstone an honest, authentic
and timeless presentation. The beauty of the red
gemstone
was to be experienced with all the senses.
